Cash Ratio Calculations

The cash ratio calculator is used to calculate the amount of money that each person within a group of people will receive based on a numerical share. This is the simplest way of distributing cash between a group of people.

A good example of distributing a cash fund between two or more people is a lottery win, between two or more people. Each person can be allocated a different share of the cash fund which is very useful if you have a lottery syndicate where some people pay for two or more tickets whereas other members of the lottery syndicate may only pay for one ticket. The ratio calculator will then calculate the exact share of the lottery winning due based on the amount that each person contributed.

How to calculate the amount of money each person will receive from a cash lump sum:

  1. Calculation type: select "Cash"
  2. Cash Fund Available: enter the amount of funds that will be shared with the group
  3. Number of People: enter the total number of people that the cash funds will be shared with
  4. [Optional] Enter Names: Enter the name of each person that will receive a share of the fund
  5. Share (e.g. 35): Enter the share that the person will receive. IF you are sharing lottery winning based on the number of tickets purchased, enter that number (1 for 1 ticket, 2 for 2 tickets etc.)

As you enter the information, the cash share ratio calculator will automatically update the results so you can see how money is shared within the group in real time.

Share as a Ratio Calculations

The shares as a ratio calculator is used to calculate the amount of money individuals will receive based on a ratio share. This is similar to the cash share ratio calculator discussed above with the main difference being that the share amount is enter as a ratio. You may be wondering why you would want to enter a ratio for sharing a cash fund rather than just a simple number. Let's use our lottery fund example again.

Let's say you have a lottery syndicate at work and you decide that if you win the lottery, the funds will be shared between each team. Each team has a different number of employees and each team buys a different amount of tickets each week. Team 1 has 7 employees and pays for 2 tickets, Team 2 has 4 employees and pays for 4 tickets, team 3 has 29 employees and pays for 1 ticket. Given that each team is contributing different amounts, it is important to ensure that if the total syndicate has a lottery win that the amount each person wins is distributed evenly. In total, that is 40 employees. Let's keep it simple and say they win 40k. If the fund were distributed based on an equal share, they would each receive 1k each meaning Team 1 would have 7k to share, Team 2 4k to share and Team 3 29k to share BUT this would not really be a fair share of the lottery fund based on the amounts each contributed within their respective teams. So, instead we base the calculation on four ratios: 2:7, 4:4 and 1:29 (2:7 = 2 tickets bought by 7 employees, 4:4= 4 tickets bought by 4 employees and 1:29 = 1 ticket bought by 29 employees). When we calculate the share of the lottery fund based on the ratio or employees to tickets bought by each team, then the result is that Team 1 receive 8656:72, Team 2 receive 30298.51 and Team 3 receive 1044.78. The team share of the lottery winning can then be distributed evenly within the teams meaning that each employee gets and even share based on the amount they contributed towards tickets within the lottery syndicate.

  1. Calculation type: select "Shares - Ratio"

  5. [Optional] Enter Names: Enter the name of each person that will receive a share of the fund
  6. Share Ratio (e.g. 1:2): Enter the ratio of the share that the person will receive. If you are sharing lottery winning based on the number of tickets each person or group purchased, enter that number, if you refer to the example above the ratios could be 2:7, 4:4 and 1:29

As you enter the information, the share ratio calculator will automatically update the results so you can see how money is shared within the group in real time based on a ratio.
